The Centre of Youth Literature is very pleased to announce the short list for the 2011 Inky Awards. The Inkys are the first Australian teen choice book awards having been awarded since 2007. Previous Gold Inky winners have included Simmone Howell, James Roy, Randa Abdel-Fattah and Lucy Christopher.

The judging panel which consisted of last year’s Gold Inky winner Lucy Christopher (Stolen), Kevin Lee and four teenagers from across Victoria and New South Wales deliberated at length on the deserving short listed titles and we thank them for their work. Bravo!

Mitchell Libraries is excited to launch this web-based language learning program available from Thursday 8 September 2011. This program is available free of charge to all library members.

Byki is a powerful and personalised language learning system, an exciting program intended to provide a fun, engaging and effective environment for language learning. It locks foreign language words and phrases into your memory so that you can recall them perfectly and remember them forever. There are over 90 languages available for you to learn plus 17 English as a Second Language (ESL) Courses. Library members have 24/7 unlimited access – anywhere, anytime with simultaneous access. Byki features listening, reading, speaking and writing exercises, speech analysis to improve pronunciation skills and interactive dialog and reading exercises. Individual progress tracking and assessment tests help identify areas for improvement and move users in the right direction.

If you want to use Byki at the library you will need to provide headphones to use within the library due to noise considerations.

I've been trying for over a week to come up with a half decent list of 'essential teen reads' to post here.. then I remembered that we live in a world of search engines and fancy computers, and almost all the answers to everything are available to us with the click of a button or two. So, lo and behold, I stumbled accross this fantastic blog post that basically lists all the books that are considered to be essential teen reads.

Centre for Youth Literature: Inky Awards/Creative Reading Competition

The Centre for Youth Literature would like to invite you to be part of the 2011 Inky Awards with the Creative Reading Prize.

The beauty of this prize is that the reader chooses the form of their entry!
Teens and readers alike are invited to submit a creative response to a book they love. It can be in ANY FORMAT THEY CHOOSE, but here are some ideas to get started:
* write a short story using the characters/setting (feel free to add zombies)
* make a video trailer or a machinima trailer
* write a poem or a song
* illustrate your favourite scene/character
* sew a costume
* make a model
* create an art piece

THE PRIZE
A Sony Reader Touch, complete with awesome e-book titles to read! (if you win)
There will be MANY runners-up who will get free books, book vouchers, and any other fun stuff we can find.
The entries will be posted on 'our favourites' on the Dog as they come in.
Submit your entries to youthlit@slv.vic.gov.au (or email a link to your YouTube/flickr/etc account) and type 'Creative Reading Prize' in the subject line.

Temporary closure of Kilmore Library

Kilmore Library is currently undergoing refurbishment involving both external and internal works. These works have started and will include repairs to the roof, new toilets and new carpet. Kilmore library will be closed for approximately 2 weeks from Monday 13 June 2011 until Wednesday 29 June, reopening Thursday 30 June 2011. Borrowers will still have access to the library catalogue online through the library website to renew items and place holds on titles. We apologise in advance for this interruption to our services. Broadford, Seymour and Wallan libraries will be open as usual. For more information, call Kilmore Library on 5782 1322 until Sunday 12 June 2011. After this date, please contact the Wallan Library on 5783 3555 for updates on the renovation and assistance with library related enquiries.

Under 12s jam 10:30am - 10:45am.

This is a drug, alcohol and smoke free event.

In the case of bad weather the event will be postponed to a later date. The event is open to youth aged up to 25 years who either live, study or work in the Mitchell Shire. Book Review: Wordless Books - The original Graphic Novels

'Wordless books' is a collection of extracts from graphic novels of the early 20th century. As the title suggests, all of the stories contained within this book are wordless, luckily however, all the stories have an explanation to them. The narrative of each story is told through highly detailed, black and white woodcuts. Majority of the stories have a similar theme to them; War, post war, anti-war, The Great Depression etc. Whilst all of these are set back in older time, we are seemingly able to relate them back to life today.

An interesting read that leaves your mind open for interpretation.

This is an amazing opportunity to be trained up in the world of writing for web and then to unleash your words and intellect onto an unsuspecting online world! Plus you'll get paid for doing it!

Youth Central roving reporters are young writers who contribute reviews, interviews and articles to youthcentral on a regular basis.

To become a roving reporter you must be:
Between 16 and 24 years of age

Living in Victoria
Familiar with and have regular access to the Internet
Able to commit to writing a minimum of 4 articles over a six-month period
Capable of writing independently and meeting deadlines
Able to attend the training workshop in Melbourne on 20-21 April 2011
Able to develop or access local knowledge of youth events and services

Not only is becoming a roving reporter a great way to develop your professional writing skills, it's also a brilliant way to build up a writing portfolio, to score the occasional free movie, CD or book, to meet your heroes, and to get inspired by other people's stories.

Book Review

Boy on a wire, Jon Doust

Set in the 1960’s in Western Australia, we meet Jack Muir; a boy just entering an all-male boarding school. He has a lot to live up too; his Father went there, and his older brother, Thomas – a cool, smart, and steady kid, also currently attends there as well.

On one hand, Jack is hot-headed, troublesome, and not overly academic; yet on the other hand, he is innocent, witty, caring, and passionate. We this throughout the entire book. At boarding school, Jack discovers a lot about himself, girls, alcohol, sore backsides that come from a visit to headmaster’s office, boring teachers, as well as bullies - and their ability to make a kid take his own life.

This is a relatively ‘light’ book; very easy to read with an earthy tone to it. It’s packed with humour and sheer honestly. If you’re not up for heavy reading, you should hit up the link below!

The brilliantly illustrated 'Absolute Superman For Tomorrow' is a must read for any Superman/comic enthusiast. At around 300 pages, it is very large comic book; however, with minimal amounts of words, it's fairly easy to follow the story line, thanks to the large, detailed, crisp and colourful illustrations.

Hunger Games – Mockingjay (Book #3 in ‘The Hunger Games’ series)

In ‘Mockingjay’, the fascinating and (sadly) final installment of the Hunger Games trilogy, Suzanne Collins introduces readers to District 13; a large underground city that has become the H.Q. of the rebel force. At the center of the war in waiting is Katniss Everdeen, the 17-year old who volunteers to be the symbol of the uprising, the Mockingjay.

We assume Katniss would eventually choose one of the two significant men in her life - Gale, her longtime childhood freind or Peeta, the one who accompanied her to the Hunger Games (twice). She'd pick one of them and live happily ever after. We also assume that she would be surrounded by friends and family, and somehow, along the way, Katniss would also get rid of President Snow and put an end to the wasteful Hunger Games, but things don’t always go according to plan.

Personally, I love this book. I love the series. I’m not a big fan of science fiction books, but this was the exception. The ending was totally un-expected (I have friends who have cried when they read the ending.) If your past the vampire phase, I’d recommend you check this book out. I know I’ll be re-reading it soon!

Yes, it's that time of the year again - and no, it's not Christmas (yet).

Anyway... the Inky Awards long list has been announced for 2010!

For those of you who don't know, the Inky's are international awards for teenage literature that are voted for online by the readers of insideadog.

Once short lists have been compiled by the judges, voting will be opened up to the public on the 12th of October, so keep an eye out for that one!

Catching Fire, Suzanne Collins (Book #2 in 'The Hunger Games' series)

Against all odds, Katniss Everdeen has won the annual Hunger Games along with her 'lover boy', Peeta Mellark, from the same district. Trouble is though, only one person is meant to win The Hunger Games, not two, and the Capitol isn't happy about them winning by an act of defiance.

Katniss and Peeta should be happy! They have just won a life of safety, food, and more than modest accommodation for not only themselves, but also their families. However, there are rumors of rebellion among the Districts, and Katniss and Peeta, to their horror, are the faces of that rebellion. The Capitol is angry, and wants revenge.

The pair receive shocking news that they'll be heading back to the arena for the 'quarter quell' along with other victors of previous games.

This book is a little more fast paced compared to the first book, although you have to read almost half of the story before you really reach the 'guts' of it all.

Personally, I love this book! It's fantastic! The series so far has had me on the edge of my seat, not wanting to put it down.

The third book is due to be released is just 6 days, so keep an eye out for that!

Looking For Alaska, by John Green

John Green’s first book can be summed up in just two words. Life changing.

The book follows Miles Halter, a tall and skinny teenager with a love for famous last words, as he leaves his life in Florida to attend boarding school in Alabama. He leaves to seek ‘The Great Perhaps’ (The final words of Francois Rabelais).

The moment that Miles arrives at his new school, his entire life changes. Meeting Alaska, a self-destructive and enigmatic beauty who Miles falls for, along with Chip, Lara and Takumi. Hanging out with them Miles experiments with danger and new things in a bid to find his ‘Great Perhaps’.

Looking For Alaska is one of the most amazing novels I have ever read. It is written beautifully, it made me laugh out loud, and it almost made me cry.

This book does the greatest thing that a book can do. It makes you think, not just about the plot but it really makes you think about yourself, and your own life.

I would and have recommended this book to everyone. It should be mentioned that this book is for the older teen audience.

The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins

The United States no longer exists; and North America is now known as ‘Panem’. There are 12 districts in Panem, each with there own purpose. All these districts are controlled and run from a city, called the Capitol. Every year in Panem, The Hunger Games is broadcasted – a blood bath of a reality TV show. 24 teenagers compete in the games, 1 boy and 1 girl from each district chosen randomly. The contestants are then put into the ‘arena’, where they are made to fight to the death. The winner will lead a life of luxury, and the losers will be, well… dead.

Katniss Everdeen, who belongs to district 12, is the main character, or the ‘good guy’ in our eyes. In the arena, we see her (and all the other contestants) deal with all sort of horrible things the game makers throw at them (you’ll have to read it yourself, there are far to many things to mention in this review!)

Personally, I couldn’t put the book down. It was a gripping read from start to finish. It is violent, and sad in places, but it is highly addictive reading. This was a fantastic book to kick off the Hunger Games trilogy. Catching fire, the second book is available now, and the 3rd book is scheduled to be released on the 25th of August 2010.

School holidays are fast approaching, and the weather doesn't seem very promising. I'm guessing that a lot of us will be spending a few days at home - which is the perfect time to get some reading in!!

The Wallan Library has a very large catalogue of Manga books, which has something for everyone! You may also want to check out some of the how-to-draw-Manga books, and maybe polish up some of those drawing skills in preparation for next semester’s art class??

Area 7, by Matthew Reilly

This book is action packed shooter that follows that follows Captain Shane Scholielf and his team protecting the President of America against the ‘bad guy’ – Caesar – who wants to respark the Civil War by destroying the Northern American cities. He has planted missiles in 14 airports around America and the only thing that stops them launching is the beating of the Ptresidents heart as there is a kinetic powered transmitter in there. In short, if the President dies then America as we know it will be obliterated! This story is held in Area 7, a top secret Air Force base, where there is no end to firepower, explosions and people getting blown up! The whole book is non-stop action in the air, water, underground and even in space! If you’ve read any of Mathew Riley’s and enjoyed them, then you’re sure to like this one.

Students from Prep to Year 9 will again be the judges in YABBA’s children’s choice book awards for 2010, creating an Australian focus for reading programs,. Nominations for Australian titles to appear on this year’s YABBA SHORTLIST must reach YABBA by Friday 19 March (Oops! A bit late!). The YABBA SHORTLIST will be published and distributed in early April.
Participation in YABBA affords “free-range” readers a great opportunity to discover the pleasures of fossicking in Australian children’s literature. Young people aged 15 to 25 throughout Mitchell Shire have the opportunity to be a part of the first Mitchell Youth Council, which will be appointed in 2010. Candidates must either live, work, study or socialise in Mitchell Shire. Nine Youth Councillors will be elected from three wards.

Application forms are available now and close 5pm Monday 3rd May 2010. Forms are available through secondary schools, supporting youth agencies, at local libraries and local post offices.

Youth Council offers the opportunity for young people to “have a say’ and be a part of the decision making around issues that affect their communities. Youth Councillors will be offered ongoing training, will help to administer youth grants, and will be part of setting up a youth website for Mitchell Shire. They will also be
given the opportunity to attend conferences and official Council events.

Youth Councillors will also elect a Youth Mayor, Deputy Youth Mayor, and Secretariat, providing excellent leadership experiences. Youth Councillors will be part of creating positive change and better opportunities for Mitchell’s youth community. They’ll develop knowledge around issues and processes that affect
them at a Federal, State and Local Government Level.

“Youth Council will provide a forum for young people to be more engaged in their community, participate in Council decision making and take on the issues that they are most passionate about,” said Mitchell Shire Council Mayor Bill Melbourne. “The experience for young people will be both empowering and rewarding.”

Five unique girls, on one very big mission . . .

Cat Dean (Queen of the Us Crew), is the coolest person at school (at lesat that's what she thinks). So, imagine the the frustration she has when she's forced to work with her number one enemy - the always right Mand Hospock, privileged pretty girl Corabelle Askew and Ms Invisible Maggie Jones, to create a magazine for half of their Year 10 English mark.

Identity, values and aspirations are all focused on as the five girls discover their true talents and the courage to speak out on serious issues faceing teenagers today.

Add to the mix their dysfunctional families, a couple of old popstars, the world's best virtual-reality machine, a wedding, a formal, lots of hot boys and a whole load of laughs, and you've got yourself an inspirational, modern-day adventure.

This book was sensational. I loved it so much that I couldn’t put it down. I could really relate to this as I have just finished year 10 and all the cliques are exactly what it is like at school. Because the author is Australian you don’t have American language in it, which I absolutely hate about books. This book is full of all types of issues including romance, parents separating, body image and lots more. It was a light and easy book to read and I would recommend it to anyone.

At the age of 17, Brain (Bri) has come to the conclusion that he’s had enough of school, and wants to drop out (and after constantly being picked on by his teachers and school mates, I don’t blame him!) He has also decided to take up a job at the local dairy. Bri’s parent’s relationship with each other is too flash; his Dad lives in a shed at the back of the house, and his mum is suffering from depression. His parents don’t talk to each other or support each other, and Bri is beginning to feel like he is what is holding the family together.

I didn’t find the book to be a thrilling read (despite the fact that it was short listed for the New South Wales Literary Award back in 2006) It was a ‘gloomy’ book, and didn’t seem to captivate my imagination. Although, one thing I really liked about the book was how much you learn about the characters, as it goes into a lot of detail.

If you’re into books that are quick and easy reads, then this is the book for you!

From Thursday 4 March we will be operating with a totally new library computer system. We are the 16th public library system in Victoria to join the Swift consortia.

As a member of Swift you get direct access to the complete stock of all libraries that are members of Swift. You can now select and reserve any of more than 2 million items in the combined libraries’ collections from our catalogue page - at no cost. Although we are sharing our stock with other library services that are members of Swift this will not be at a disadvantage to our own library members. Our library members will always have priority access to our own library items i.e. reserves on Mitchell items will be satisfied first before reserves from other Swift libraries.

Our catalogue page will have a new look with extra features e.g.

• Access to a kids version of the catalogue

• Links to hot websites

• Easy access to books on the Premiers’ Reading Challenge list

• Simple searching and reserving of individual magazine copies

With the introduction of the new computer system all items borrowed from the library will have a standardised loan period of three weeks.

It's not all about you, Calma
by Barry Jonsberg

After 5 years, Calma isn't really ready to accept her father back into her life after he ran off with a bar maid - and she's defiantly not ready to forgive him. On top of that her 'mother' is keeping secrets from her, and her best friend, Vanessa, isn't her normal self as she is facing a few issues.

But all isn't doom and gloom; Calma lands herself a job at crazicheep, the same place where, Jason, her crush works. Calma also gets a new teacher - Ms. Moss. Calma thinks she's the bees knees, as she is possibly one of the best teachers she has ever had.

Overall though, her life seems to be falling apart bit by bit. She just wants everything back to normal.

Personally I really liked the book, the start of it was full of 'LOL' moments. It is bursting with sarcasm, and over exaggeration, and you really get a feel for who the character are (except for the Mum, which left me a little confused.)

If you are into comedy, spontaneousness, sarcasm, and books about the struggles of a teenage girl, then you'll really enjoy this book.

City of Bones by Cassandra Clare is a wonderful fantasy novel that will appeal to everyone who fell in love with the way Twilight combined fictional ideals like vampires and werewolves with reality.
Clary isn't your average fifteen-year-old nerdy hipster. She sees invisible people, strange people - demons with facial piercings, gay warlocks, and young, attractive, arrogrant demon-hunters.
City of Bones is book 1 in the Mortal Instruments Trilogy.

Sabriel by Garth Nix is a spooky fantasy novel to suit teenagers. Garth Nix is one of Australia's most popular fantasy authors, his works are always fast-paced with vivid descriptions, excitement and humour.
Sabriel follows the story of 18-year-old Sabriel, who enters the mysterious (and dangerous!) realm of the Old Kingdom to save her father, a necromancer, from a great evil that will threaten more than her life. Inside the Old Kingdom is a world of uncontrolled magic and the dead - who won't stay dead.

Following in the footsteps of Twilight is the Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead.
Bloodlines and heritage rights, the struggle between good and evil interwoven with teenage life makes for a compelling read, but if you aren't familiar with the structure of typical fantasy novels, you might find yourself a little overwhelmed at the complexity of this novel. It is well worth the effort though, some of the concepts introduced by Mead are the things you'd wish Twilight included.

Peeps by Scott Westerfeld is a unique spin on vampire fiction, combining it with science rather than fantasy. There is no magic, no flying and no romance.
Cal's life is changed forever after an encounter with a mysterious woman. He becomes infected by an insidious parasite and is unknowingly infecting his partners and now they've turned into what he calls "peeps". Now it's Cal's turn to hunt them down, before they create even more of their own kind...

Undine by Penni Russon is a tale of sixteen-year-old Undine and her neighbour, Trout. Together they are two-thirds of a romantic triangle, make a compelling and believable pair, grappling with the equally daunting burdens of newfound magical ability and of ordinary high school.The tension between these very real teens and their mythic underpinnings is what makes this title so intriguing.

Book Review - Twilight

Forget any vampire romance you have read before, Stephenie Meyer's Twilight is so unique it is almost like it’s in its own genre.

Twilight is simply and yet beautifully written.
The descriptions of Forks leave you feeling like you can almost smell the damp air and hear the rain falling on the roof.
The romance between Edward and Bella is both touching and compelling.
There is a melancholic feel to their impossible love, yet at the same time they both are unwilling to give up hope that their relationship is not doomed.
The book reaches a fever pitch of excitement as the romance between Bella and Edward turns into a frantic race to stay alive.

I have heard Twilight described as “a vampire story for people who don’t like vampire stories” and I think I would agree with that. This book really has something for everyone. Young adult readers, vampire fans or romance readers will all find Twilight to be an appealing story.

For a Young Adult novel the book is quite long but don’t let that put you off reading it because each page is to be savoured. Believe me, this is one book that you won’t want to end.

Thankfully, this isn't the end for Edward & Bella.
Their story continues in the rest of Twilight series; New Moon, Eclipse & Breaking Dawn.
Keep an eye out for the much anticipated Midnight Sun - a fifth installment to the series, but from Edward's perspective.

Hi everyone, well I know it's now holiday time but here is a website that will be very useful if you are in year 10 or doing VCE next year. It's called Ergo and it has been made by the clever people at the State Library of Victoria. The website has heaps of digital images from the libraries collection of artefacts (the library doesn't just have books, it keeps important letters, posters, and things from the past). The other half of the website has step by step guides to writing essays and doing research.

Book Review: Finnikin of the Rock

Finnikin of the Rock
by Melina Marchetta

Finnikin of the Rock, a fantasy epic of feudal intrigue, ancient magic, bloodshed and exile, and two opposing lovers destined to unite.
It was written by acclaimed author, Melina Marchetta, in a turn of character and genre.
Marchetta's previous novels, Looking for Alibrandi and Saving Francesca, were realistic with relatable characters set in a convincing Australian setting. Her characters, like Josephine in Looking for Alibrandi, were complex enough to be considered real.
Finnikin of the Rock is the opposite of this, but that is no deterrent.
The plot is well executed among a slew of memorable characters. The protagonist - the obvious eponymous Finnikin is just as relatable with audiences as was Josephine in Looking For Alibrandi.

Book Review: One Girl, Two Decks, Three Degrees of Love

One girl, etc is a fresh novel from a newcomer author Jonny Zucker. Despite writing from a girl’s point of view he seems to have learned his stuff! He gives a fair insight into the mind of a teenage girl without being presumptuous or stereotypical.
The story is told from the narrative of fourteen-year old Zoë Wynch who is obsessed with becoming a DJ. However, she has a big obstacle: her mother, who thinks DJ-ing is a waste of time. But all Zoë wants to do is mix records!
Unfortunately DJ Zed (her DJ name) has never had a single gig until Zoë’s terrifying head teacher Mr Maxwell (or Mad Max as he is known as to the pupils) offers her an unmissable opportunity. Zoë is on top of the world but then some surprises come along…
